The cancellation of this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show has met with mixed reactions. The decision by the CV Show Partnership (the Road Haulage Association, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Institute of Road Transport Engineers) and its committee is an unavoidable consequence of the worldwide economic downturn.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling MP, will deliver the Budget on 22nd April with the 1.84 pence increase in fuel duty already in place. The measure, which came into effect on 1st April (All Fools’ Day), does little for the good of UK hauliers. We would urge the Chancellor to rebate the measure to the road transport sector.

The announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport, Geoff Hoon MP, on 15th January to develop a high-speed rail line between London and Scotland provides opportunities for freight as well as passengers. Since the stated purpose of a high-speed line is to provide additional capacity on the route corridor from London to West Midlands and beyond, we would expect a significant amount of new capacity to be provided and guaranteed on the existing lines in this corridor for freight.
