TIR offers young people hi-tech chance to train for a career behind the wheel
An East Yorkshire training company is offering young people the chance to have a taste of life behind the wheel – and will set one promising young driver on the road to a career.
TIR Training Services Ltd, which provides logistics and driver training to some of the biggest companies in the UK, is inviting people aged between 18 and 21 to try a new, hi-tech truck driving simulator at the company’s training base in Beverley.
The US-manufactured simulator, currently the only one in the country, allows people to learn how to drive for maximum fuel efficiency and minimum emissions, two of the most important details for employers working to cut costs. It also lets trainees ‘experience’ emergency situations such as a major tyre blow-out, and lets them practise driving in extreme weather conditions – all in complete safety and without risking expensive vehicles.
The young person who shows the most promise while learning to drive a truck in the simulator will be offered a place at TIR to train towards his or her LGV licence, free of charge, equipping them for a possible career as a driver.
TIR’s Sales and Marketing Manager Tim Watson said: “The minimum age for holding an LGV licence was recently lowered to 18, so at a time when many young people are struggling to find career opportunities we thought this would be a great way to offer a glimpse of life as a truck driver and spread the word about driving as a career option for young people.
“This simulator is the future of training in our industry and it’s being showcased at our site in Beverley. It allows us to train people in a safe, cost-effective and environmentally responsible way. Many companies and drivers are aiming to reduce fuel use and cut emissions, and the simulator is a good way of teaching methods of driving to achieve this.
“This will be the only simulator of its kind in the UK. We want to gauge interest in such a hi-tech training approach.”
TIR, based in Beverley, East Yorkshire, began trading in 2000 as an LGV driving school and has rapidly grown to become a total training solutions provider to the logistics industry. The company was acquired in 2006 by the Deflog VQ Trust, an educational charitable trust that provides logistic training to the military. Both TIR and Deflog operate as not-for-profit organisations, reinvesting any profits back into the sector.
