Brittany Ferries supports GBR Match Race team

Olympic hopefuls team up with leading ferry company

Cotentin provides an impressive backdrop for the GBR Match Race teamWith interest in the 2012 Olympics growing, Brittany Ferries has announced its ongoing support for the Poole based GBR Match Race Girls team of Lucy and Kate Macgregor and Annie Lush, who are hoping to be selected to represent Britain in Weymouth in 2012.  They make up one of the top International women’s match racing teams and won the 2010 Ladies Match Racing World Championships.

The team is now competing in the ISAF Match Race class in various World Cup events with a view to maintaining their hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympic event.  The girls were recently runners up at the Sail for Gold event in Weymouth and will be taking part in the Olympic Test event at the same venue in August.  The discipline of Match Racing calls for some very special skills, as the competitors are required to go ‘head to head’ in what can best be described as a ‘series of duels on water’ to determine the winner.

The team recently came to the Port of Poole to visit the Brittany Ferries’ vessel Cotentin, which is the freight-only ship that is used for a regular service to Santander as well as operating on the Poole/Cherbourg route.  The dedicated freight service also offers the freight market options for abnormal and hazardous shipments to both Spain and France.
