It is fair to say that 2011 was a strong year for the rail freight sector with a number of key projects being delivered, new services starting and continued growth, particularly in the intermodal sector.
Road and rail infrastructure plans welcomed by FTA
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed the Chancellor’s decision to inject new money into the cash-starved transport infrastructure as part of measures to get the economy moving again. The road widening schemes identified by the Chancellor are some of industry’s key trade routes but represent sections of the network where delays are endemic, leaving industry to foot the bill for wasted time, extra fuel and missed delivery slots.

Rail freight consumer traffic continues to grow for the eighth consecutive year with a 16.6% increase in the first quarter of 2011 for products such as clothing, furniture, electrical components and food stuff . Rail represents 11% of freight surface market with a quarter of all products imported through the South East container ports being transported inland by rail.
