Free advice scheme launched for Welsh freight operators
Issue: Winter 2008
A free advice scheme aimed at improving the efficiency of Welsh industry by both reducing carbon emissions and cutting operating costs has come into force. The Freight Best Practice for Wales programme was launched by Deputy Minister for Regeneration Leighton Andrews AM at County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff.
Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport’s ‘Logistics Wales 2007’ Conference, the Deputy Minister for Regeneration said: “The Freight Best Practice programme demonstrates the Welsh Assembly Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting Welsh industry and is in keeping with the aims and objectives of ‘One Wales’.
“This new initiative will help deliver our commitment in the Welsh Freight Strategy to empower operators with the correct tools and information to improve their operational and environmental performance.
“We are delighted that the programme is now available to operators in Wales. It has a proven track record of making a difference; it saves operators money and helps reduce their carbon footprint.”
Freight Best Practice for Wales provides free operational efficiency advice to Welsh freight operators in the form of best practice guidance and support material aimed at cutting fuel use and CO2 emissions. The programme covers five key areas – saving fuel, developing skills, equipment, operational efficiency and performance management.
Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, and delivered by Faber Maunsell Limited, Freight Best Practice for Wales builds on the success of the Department for Transport sponsored programme for England.
The estimated benefits from implementing the Welsh programme range from 11,050 tonnes to 44,200 tonnes per year in terms of carbon emissions. Using current valuation methodologies this equates to an external cost saving of between £265,173 and £1,060,691. The annual operational cost savings for Welsh operators adopting the best practice programme is estimated to be between £3,299,000 and £13,194,000.
