European Parliament calls for unified controls on EU driving and rest time rules

Karen Crispe, Managing Director of Tachodisc LtdTachodisc can confirm that the European Parliament (EP) is calling for unified coordination and control with regard to EU rules on driving and resting times, plus the regulation on tachographs for commercial vehicles engaged in international transport.

This follows the EP adopting a ‘Report on penalties for serious infringements against the social rules in road transport’ in April 2010, which pointed out clear differences between Member States in enforcing road transport social legislation, and in particular the EU regulation on driving and resting times.

The report states that the penalties imposed for infringements against the social rules widely differ throughout Europe causing severe economical and social problems to drivers, enforcers and the whole transport industry.

In response and to push for solid solutions that will improve the current enforcement discrepancies, the report was followed up last month at the Conference on Social Rules in Road Transport.  The conference provided a platform for hauliers, drivers, enforcement authorities, the EP and the EU Commission to exchange views on this matter.

The aim is to create a common and agreed understanding of the legislation and to find solutions that will harmonise enforcement practices throughout Europe.
