Christmas came early for DB Schenker Rail UK

Planning for the festive season began months ago for Britain’s largest rail freight operator, when back in August it started co-ordinating deliveries on high speed intermodal services.

To ensure that deliveries of festive goods reach shelves across the UK in time for Christmas, DB Schenker Rail UK has been running intermodal services from the ports of London Gateway, Southampton and Felixstowe.

The company has transported containers full of seasonal products by rail to major cities in the Midlands, North of England and Scotland.  Products delivered have included clothing, footwear, Christmas decorations, toys, seasonal food, electrical goods and artificial Christmas trees.

Customer Service Representative Ian Cox has been booking containers, full of Christmas goodies, from Southampton to Burton service since the summer.

Meanwhile, rail and sea shipment co-ordinator Ruth Loader and customer service representatives Joe Mullett and Kevin Harmer have been coordinating the movement of stock into the Midlands, the North West and Yorkshire on DB Schenker Rail UK’s container services from Southampton to Bift and Trafford Park, and Felixstowe to Wakefield.

David Cross, head of intermodal, explained: “We understand how challenging Santa’s logistical operations can be and we are glad to offer our assistance through our intermodal services.

“Our rail freight operations are an integral part of the Christmas season as many of the goods found under the tree and on the table with the turkey were delivered by our trains.

“Rail is also recognised as a more environmentally friendly form of transport than road, making it a great option for our customers’ Christmas deliveries.”
